Winter Carnival’s snow sculpture, Québec City.
Jean Marie and Christopher: “The competition is straightforward: each entrant is given the same-sized block of frozen snow (though the size varies across competitions, with international artists given blocks the size of small buildings, three or four times larger than those allotted to local artists). We were surprised the sculptures were carved from frozen snow, not ice: it is opaque rather than translucent, and the cut faces, while they can be polished, have the same natural consistency as a tightly-packed snow bank. Considering that they were carved from a single block, the works were extraordinarily complex.”
